Tailgating Tips

It’s September, and one of America’s favorite pastimes – football – is back! Tailgating before the game can be as much fun as attending the game itself, but it can also take a toll on the environment.

If you’re planning to grill out, take steps towards sustainability at the grocery store or farmer’s market. Choose organic meat if possible, avoid overly packaged snacks, and bring reusable shopping bags.

If you’re tailgating somewhere downtown, try to carpool with friends and family. You’ll save money on gas and parking, and you’ll cut down on pollution. Better yet, it will prevent you from losing your friends in the pre-game traffic!

Lastly, please do not leave trash behind. In many parking lots and tailgate areas, there is not designated staff responsible for cleaning up after the game, so what gets left behind becomes litter. Litter is harmful to animals, the ecosystem, and the community. Take everything to a trash can or recycling bin on your way to the game, or bring a trash bag to keep in your car until you get home.
