Event Spotlight: Keller-Williams Red Day

Here at Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, we have the pleasure of working with some OUTSTANDING corporate partners. Some come back year after year; others are just learning about KCB and our mission or volunteering for the first time. Either way, we are proud to forge these relationships. They afford us the capability to bring new life to areas of the city where we wouldn’t be able without their support.

We have also been very fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate staff at KCB, both past and present.

And, at times, those two factors inter-mingle, resulting in a volunteer effort worth mentioning!

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful partnered with Keller-Williams Realty (KW) for their annual day-of-service, “Red Day” on May 12th. Our former Quality of Life Program Manager, Adam Curry, introduced us to the Keller-Williams at their Red Day planning committee, a task he took on as a new real-estate agent with the firm.

Once upon a time, KCB helped paint a mural facing Hanna Playground in Over-the-Rhine. The current state of the mural is deteriorating, so we set out on a mission to help bring some new life to it. Plans were made for Keller-Williams to help scrape the old paint from the wall, a first step in the process of painting a brand new mural. And since the mural wasn’t the only eye-sore in the area, we also planned to tackle a variety of other cleanup tasks nearby.

At the end of the day, we managed to completely prepare the wall for priming, cleaned up litter, weeded and mulched street trees all along W McMicken Avenue, and painted nearby fire hydrants. We even had a drone take aerial photos of the mural being scraped! Pretty cool!

The McMicken Avenue Corridor has been a haven for human trafficking in recent years. Along with City Councilmember Yvette Simpson‘s initiatives to help deter the activity, KCB has focused projects in the area as well. In fact, we did an event spotlight on a project last fall about the McMicken Play Area, just up the street from Hanna Playground. It’s our hope that our continued efforts will help to further improve and decrease the crime rate in the area.

Thanks to Keller-Williams for partnering with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful for your Red Day 2016!
